How I leveraged my MSW to start a unique business
People often ask me how I started a whole business editing MSW personal statements.
The truth is, I didn’t.
I started out by advertising resume editing in my city on Kijiji (the Canadian version of Craigslist) when I was in grad school. I met with the most random characters, and it was pretty fun. We met at the local library and sat together editing their resumes from all kinds of fields.
Then I came across something called Fiverr which allowed me to list my resume editing services online. Sweet!
One day one of my peers who was applying for her MSW asked me to look over her personal statement, and it occurred to me that people would probably be interested in personal statement editing too. So, I put a listing up on Fiverr – and it actually got bites!
I first put that listing up in November 2018. My first year I made a few hundred dollars. Over the years it’s grown and grown, and now it’s my full time job.
If you told me that me meeting people in libraries back in 2017 would lead to me having a full on business in 2023 I would not have believed it.
I didn’t have a vision.
I definitely didn’t have a business plan.
I just saw an opportunity to help people and make some extra cash by editing resumes while I was in grad school and started DOING it.
You can do this too.
If you want to start a niche business I encourage you start thinking about the ways in which you can help people. You don’t need to think too far ahead or come up with a fancy website or business model. Sometimes it’s a matter of posting online, offering a service, and seeing where it goes.
I created a resource for you to help you uncover possible niches. Get it here.
